IT news #1: Google strengthens security through acquisition of Mandiant.

Topic: Google, cyber security

Google Cloud has joined forces with the US company to create an ‘end-to-end security operations suite’ for business clients. Google has already confirmed a definitive agreement to gain Mandiant. The company will join Google Cloud once the deal goes through. It will be completed for ~ £18 per share, in an all-cash transaction estimated at £ 4,2 billion. Google said the acquisition of Mandiant will strengthen Google Cloud’s existing strategy. With this addition, Google aims to enhance its offerings to deliver end-to-end security operations with increased support to clients across their Cloud and on-premise environments. It has also emphasized Mandiant’s role in bringing real-time and in-depth threat intelligence.

IT news #2: Microsoft is adding yet another feature to Teams.

Topic: Microsoft Teams, video meetings

Microsoft are currently working on a Teams update that will give more users access to one of its most useful features. As stated in the Microsoft 365 product roadmap, guest users will soon gain access to the live captions feature for the MS Teams desktop version, an element that is currently available to registered users only. According to the roadmap, the collaboration platform update is still in the early stages of development but is planned to be launched by the end of April. The live captions were introduced after the shift to remote working and it is designed to ensure that all video meeting participants can follow the thread of the conversation effectively, including people with hearing impairments, whose command of the language used in the meeting is imperfect or anyone with a poor network connection or a noisy environment.

IT news #4: 500% surge in mobile malware since February.

Topic: Cybersecurity, Malware

According to researchers, there has been a fivefold increase in mobile malware across Europe since February 2022. Most of these attacks were found on Android devices, with six of the most severe variants targeting technology giant Google’s operating system compared to just one aiming at iOS, Proofpoint researchers have found. According to the research, mobile malware is most often downloaded via app stores and is quite widespread on Android devices due to the platform’s openness to support different app stores. Side-loading – the process of allowing applications to be installed on a device via third-party app stores or directly to the device – is prohibited on iOS, which aims to limit the spread of such infections. The research also highlights a rise in mobile messages attacks, such as SMS-based phishing attacks known as smishing. Due to Android’s support for side-loading, the effectiveness of these attacks is more effective on the platform than on iOS.
