Client/server LAN:
On a client/server LAN, several devices are connected to a central server with all computers designated a role as either a client or a server. A server shares resources on the network among the client computers. The client LAN is dependent on the server to grant access and manage the information.

They are responsible for handling the business’ most valuable data and are not accessed by operators regularly. They are generally stored in locked closets, data centres (server rooms), or the Cloud – the rest of the computers on the network then work as clients. Client/server LANs are responsible for file storage management, handling application, and device access, and network traffic.

LANs consist of three different layers: the core layer, the access layer and the distribution layer. The number of LAN components in a single company network – which can potentially be hundreds or thousands – depends on the number of employees, their attached devices and the size of the room.

Whether a new network installation with required equipment (choosing a network or PoE Switch) or managing your existing infrastructure set, based on your requirements, rest assured it will be taken care of by us.

Option A – Network switch: A regular switch (also called a bridging hub or switching hub) is a networking hardware responsible for receiving and forwarding data to a destination device on a computer network by using packet switching. It only forwards data packets to and from devices located within the given network compared to a router.

Option B – PoE switch: The main differences between network and PoE switches is based on PoE accessibility. A PoE switch has the ‘Power over Ethernet’ functionality built into it to allow devices on a network to communicate without an external power source – it provides power that can be used to run other devices via Ethernet cabling.

Managed LAN Services in London FAQ

What is the definition of a Managed LAN?
A Managed Local Area Network (LAN) is an industrialised network management service that provides complete control of the LAN infrastructure, resulting in a seamless and secure network for your business.

Proactive monitoring and detailed reporting are part of the Service Level Agreement (SLA) to help you get ahead of any issues occurring in the future. At the same time, it promises to deliver you a high-performing company network.

How does a Managed LAN work?
One of the advantages of a Managed LAN service is that you get to decide the level of support your business requires. Depending on your location, you can outsource all your LAN infrastructure management or only where adequate IT support is not available to an IT Solutions company.
What types of LAN Networks are available?
There are two types of LANs available. The client/server LAN means that several devices are connected to a central server. It includes the management of file storage, application and device access, and also network traffic. A peer-to-peer LAN is smaller and therefore doesn’t have a central server, making it unable to handle heavy workloads.
Are there any other services related to the Managed LAN services?
Yes. Our Managed LAN services include monitoring the status and health of connections, giving visibility to potential issues like slowdowns, frequent disconnections, lagging and Quality of Service (QoS) levels. TWC can also quickly and cost-effectively upgrade or re-provision the internet connection to faster or more economical services as required and monitor any security problems like wireless intrusion. Our managed wireless LAN services also give IT admins the ability to identify Wi-Fi problems and performance issues and allow them to be fixed remotely and efficiently.
Does TWC offer Remote LAN Management Services?
Yes, we do. Our range of Managed LAN services can be overseen and maintained remotely, including our Draytek, Cisco Meraki and other routers. During the process, we manage and analyse the LAN data accessed directly from a router and adjust settings where necessary. As such, a Managed LAN eliminates the need for on-site engineering visits, making it one of the most efficient ways to support a business in a hybrid working environment.
Does TWC offer Cloud-Managed LAN services?
Yes, as part of the remote Managed LAN services TWC provides, we monitor the local and Cloud network and make configuration changes necessary using Cloud controllers, whether within Azure or AWS. This results in maximised resources and flexible communication options for any business regardless of its size, whether in an on-site, hybrid or ‘working from home’ environment.
Managed LAN Services vs Unmanaged: Which one is better for my business?
Investing in a Managed LAN gives you the advantage of having personalised 24/7/365 support available, including troubleshooting, compared to an unmanaged LAN that requires a considerable amount of client-led resource and staff on site.
What other Connectivity services does TWC provide?
Does TWC offer 24/7 support in case something goes wrong?
Absolutely. TWC is one of the few companies with  ‘follow-the-sun’ locations in the UK, Asia and the Americas, which makes us able to support our client base 24/7/365.
My business is not London based. Can TWC still serve me efficiently?
Of course. We operate across three different countries – Potters Bar in the UK, Jersey City in the USA and Central, Hong Kong – globally across three different time zones, making us the most efficient IT solution provider. We answer your calls within ten seconds and offer you a solution in ten minutes as part of our industry-leading SLA.
