IT news #1: Air India’s system hack exposed 4.5 million people’s data

Topic: Cybersecurity

An estimated 4.5 million people’s personal data was disclosed after the IT system used by Air India suffered a cyberattack. SITA, the company that operated the breached systems, revealed the attack back in February but didn’t specify
its scale or who was affected. Cybercriminals were able to access data including names, passport information and payment details back to 10 years, from August 26, 2011, to February 3, 2021. The airline said the attack
“affected around 4,500,000 data subjects in the world” but didn’t confirm if they were their own customers.

IT news #2: Cyberattacks on operational technology increasing

Topic: Cybersecurity

A recent report by FireEye’s Mandiant looked at attacks on operational technology control processes. Once viewed as complex due to access requirements, many more internet-facing endpoints offer a broader attack surface. Mandiant noted that attackers are not necessarily sophisticated, nor do they know what they are targeting. Graphical user interfaces have been accessed, allowing attackers to modify variables without understanding the process being controlled.

IT news #3: Canada Post supplier data breach exposes shipping information of 950,000 parcel recipients

Topic: Cybersecurity

A cyberattack on a third-party supplier of Canada Post has resulted in a data breach impacting 950,000 parcel recipients. The supplier notified Canada Post “that manifest data held in their systems, which was associated with some Canada Post
customers, had been compromised”. The exposed data includes the names and postal addresses of parcel recipients and email addresses and/or phone numbers. The shipping details of over 950,000 recipients were revealed from a nearly
three-year period between July 2016 and March 2019.

IT news #4: Ransomware attack to hit Ireland’s national health service

Topic: Cybersecurity

Ireland’s national health service system was also recently down across the country due to a ransomware attack. Following the incident, officials warned that patients waiting for non-urgent care should be prepared for delays. Further disruptions
to the system continued for several days. The country’s Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed that some of the data was encrypted, but the health system refused to pay the ransomware demand.
