IT news #1: Windows 11 launches with redesigned menu

Topic: Windows, Operating system

The latest version of the Microsoft operating system was launched as a free upgrade for Windows 11 users – reported the BBC. The new version is promised not to be something extreme from what users already experienced. It was confirmed, after extensive testing, there has not been an issue and the upgrade is ready to use. It has brought, however, some significant design changes along with some system changes. For instance, the Start menu is centred on the screen with icons in the taskbar. When a user clicks on it, the Start button brings up the most often used apps. During the development process, watching how people use their computers was also taken into consideration.

IT news #2: UK Umbrella payroll firm Giant Pay suffer a cyberattack

Topic: Cyberattack, Data Breach

A recent cyberattack hit Giant Group, the umbrella company with thousands of contractors in its database, leaving workers out in the cold. It was described as “sophisticated” as it forced Giant Pay to shut down its whole network, including phone and email systems and its IT infrastructure. The incident came to light after contractors were unable to contact the company or complete payroll-related tasks. Giant Group has confirmed that it has made interim payments to more than 8,000 contractors who receive payments for the work they complete to an outside company via the payroll services provider. It is not known is whether the total amount has been paid or payments are still due.

IT news #3: FileCloud and Microsoft Teams announces integration

Topic: Microsoft Teams, File share

The enterprise file sharing and backup platform FileCloud has announced the integration of its file sync, sharing and data governance platform with Microsoft Teams. The cloud-agnostic platform enables organisations to share files and links securely through a centralised platform conveniently. It can also be self-hosted on-premises, accessed to the cloud or operated as an infrastructure as a service (IaaS). The installation within MS Teams is a simple process to install. Users then can share information and files with co-workers from FileCloud’s secure environment. Shared links are also protected by its comprehensive security features, involving download limits, link expiration and password protection.

IT news #4: DDoS attacks are now more disruptive and powerful

Topic: Privacy, DDoS

A recent report discovered and warned about a rise in DDoS attacks and the ways cybercriminals get creative with ways to make their campaigns more prolific and disruptive. Cybersecurity researchers described the growth of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks as record-breaking. During the first half of 2021, 5.4 million recorded attacks took place – a number that shows an 11% rise compared to last year’s figures. Several of these attacks used between 27 and 31 different vectors with the attackers being able to switch between them to cause further disruptions. Due to the increased reliance on the digital sphere, DDoS attacks have become highly efficient and significantly disrupted services people rely on in their professional and personal lives.
