IT news #1: Vodafone launches self-powered masts running on renewable energy.

Topic: Vodafone, telecommunications

Vodafone has announced plans to install mobile phone masts powered entirely by renewable energy following a trial run later this year. The masts will be built in remote locations across the UK, away from any connection to the electricity grid. It also aims to improve rural connectivity by allowing new sites to be built at more remote locations, backing industry commitments to cover 95% of the UK landmass by 2025. The telecommunications company has been collaborating alongside Crossflow Energy to develop the firm’s wind turbine technology, integrating solar and battery technologies to establish a self-powered mobile network. Vodafone’s network partner will be responsible for running a proof-of-concept mast with Crossflow’s Turbine technology on remote mobile locations.

IT news #4: Qualcomm to revolutionise mobile phones with changed chips.

Topic: Mobile phone, chip

The company has announced the rebranding of its Snapdragon chips to make choosing a mobile phone more straightforward. Qualcomm sells its Snapdragon chips to a large number of companies, including Samsung, HP and OnePlus, to power laptops, mobiles and watches. However, comparing these devices can often prove to be challenging given the complicated names of the Snapdragon processors, which are characterised by a collection of complex numbers. Processors are the central part of any device, and as such, it can be hard to determine whether a given mobile device is better than another. The company said it would simplify its branding in many ways, resulting in major rebranding, starting with Qualcomm being separated from Snapdragon. The same organisation will still own the companies as before; however, Qualcomm will be removed from the chips., bringing yet another era to an end.
